Key facts for journalists:
- A 2002 National Audit Office report identified
that an 18 year old with a disability or other health problem is only
40% as likely to enter higher education as an 18 year old without
a disability or other health problem
- In December 2002, the Higher Education
Funding Council published the first disability performance indicators
for individual higher education institutions. These record the number
of people applying for Disabled Students' Allowances at each institution.

- From September 2002, for the first time, disabled people have legal
rights in education under the Disability Discrimination Act Part 4:
Education. The legislation covers pre- and post-16 education.
- Skill's Information Service answered 6199 enquiries, 2552 of which
were from disabled students, from April 2001-April 2002.
