Where can I get funding to do a course if I am turned down by my Local Education Authority (Student Awards Agency in Scotland (SAAS))?

There are grant making organisations and trusts which have been specially set up to help disabled people in education. Although Skill do not have any funds to distribute we do maintain a list. For further information please refer to the following Information Sheet:

What extra financial help can I get in Higher Education (degree level) as a person with a disability?

If you have a disability which means that you need additional help and support to study in Higher Education then you may be entitled to apply for a Disabled Students Allowance through your local funding authority (LEA, SAAS etc). The allowance is intended to pay for the additional help, support and equipment you need in order to study. Please see the following Information Sheets for further details. From Autumn 2000 it does not matter whether you study full or part time you may still be eligible. For further information please refer to the following Information Sheets:

What extra financial support can I get in Further Education?

There are no Disabled Students Allowances in Further Education. However Further Education Colleges can draw money down form the Further Education Funding Council to make their services more accessible to individual disabled people. If your educational needs cannot be met by your local further education college you can apply to study at a specialist college, Contact Skill’s Information Service for further details and refer to the following Information Sheet:

My son/daughter is almost 16 years old and wants to know what his/her options are in post-16 education?

Your child could stay on at school and go into the sixth form (if there is one) or transfer to another sixth form to study A levels. Alternatively, they may wish to do a more vocational or technical course and this may be provided at your local further education college. If local further educational colleges cannot meet their needs then they may be able to apply to a specialist further education college. All of these decisions need to be made in consultation with both the Careers Service and Local Education Authority. For further information please refer to the following Information Sheet:
Funding for students with disabililities in further education

I am in the process of looking for work – should I tell prospective employers I am disabled?

When and if to declare your disability to an employer is a decision that only you can make. However what is important to note is that the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 may not protect you unless your employer is aware of your disability. For further information please refer to the following Information Sheet:
